Our thoughts work the same way.

When we’re in the middle of a high-stakes programme — the mind fills with noise. Worry, analysis, catastrophising. Most leaders try to manage that noise. Push through it. Or get lost in it.

What I’ve found coaching senior leaders is that a different approach works better. Leave it alone.

Not because the circumstances aren’t real. But because the noise itself is thought, passing through. And thought, left alone, settles.

I’ve sat at enough programme boards to know that the conversation is almost always about milestones, risks and delivery. Rarely about whether the senior team has the psychological bandwidth to lead what’s being asked of them. And yet that’s where programmes succeed or fail.
